Crochet stitches, step by step
How to sc2tog
Single crochet two together (sc2tog) · Double crochet two together (dc2tog) in UK patterns
Sc2tog turns two stitches into one. Each of the two single crochets is started and left with its last loop on the hook, then one yarn over finishes them together. It's the usual way to shape single crochet, from amigurumi to the edges of a row.

Insert the hook into the next stitch (1 loop on hook).
Yarn over and draw up a loop (2 loops on hook).
Insert the hook into the next stitch (2 loops on hook).
Yarn over and draw up a loop (3 loops on hook).
Yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on the hook (1 loop on hook).
One single crochet two together made: two stitches become one.
Rendered from Krowshea's 3D yarn, not photographed or drawn by hand, and shown for a right-handed crocheter.
Good to know
- Counts
- It works into two stitches and makes one, so the row is one stitch shorter.
- In amigurumi
- Many crocheters work this decrease through the front loops only, which hides it better on a stuffed piece.
- Chart symbol
- Two single crochet symbols whose tops meet.

Single crochet two together as code
Krowshea is a programming language for crochet. A decrease at each end of rows 3 to 5. A row that lost stitches without a decrease would be reported as a mistake. Krowshea checked it, then wrote the pattern and drew the chart.
