Crochet stitches, step by step
How to double crochet
Double crochet (dc) · Treble crochet (tr) in UK patterns
Double crochet is crochet's tall, everyday stitch: grannies, shells, V-stitches and most blankets are built from it. Yarn over once, put the hook in, and the loops come off two at a time.

Yarn over (2 loops on hook).
Insert the hook into the next stitch, under both loops.
Yarn over and draw up a loop (3 loops on hook).
Yarn over and draw through 2 loops (2 loops on hook).
Yarn over and draw through the last 2 loops (1 loop on hook).
One double crochet made.

Double crochet as code
Krowshea is a programming language for crochet. The ch 3 counts as the first double crochet, so each row is the ch 3 and 11 dc. Krowshea checked it, then wrote the pattern and drew the chart.
